Introduction

Teaching pronunciation is of major importance in teaching English as a Second or Foreign language. Pronunciation is an overarching term that covers multiple aspects of spoken language. These aspects include phonetics, phonology, and the prosody of English. Phonetics refers to the actual physical sounds of a language. Phonology looks at how those sounds work together systematically. Prosody is about how changes to pitch, volume and length are used to create word stress, sentence stress, and intonation (Cruttenden, 2014, pp. 3-4). An understanding of the phonetic, phonological, and prosodic features of English is crucial to student success in the ESL/EFL classroom.
