Pre learning questions

In your journal, reflect on your experience as a learner by considering these questions before reading the ‘Receptive Skills’ section.

• Is it important for students to practice their reading and listening skills in the classroom? Why (not)?
• When you were at school, what opportunities did you have to develop your reading and listening skills? Were they useful? Why (not)? What could teachers have done differently?
• Students often find listening more difficult than reading. Why do you think this is? Did you have the same experience when you were learning English?
• Did your teachers encourage you to practice reading and listening outside the classroom? What suggestions did they make?
